Imphal, April 19 2010:
A group of newly recruited Manipur Police constables (drivers/despatch drivers) who were marching to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding joining reports and induction into service was driven away by the police.
The new recruits numbering around 30 marched towards the CM's office under the banner Manipur Police Constable (Driver/Despatch Driver) Welfare Association from Kakwa this afternoon.
In the morning, they held a meeting at Kakwa Asem Leikai community hall.
As they marched towards the CM's office, they were driven back by police.
Even as some police officers asked the agitating recruits to leave their memorandum with them (police officers) saying that they would deliver it to the Chief Minister, the recruits turned down the offer.
According to the memorandum which could not reach the Chief Minister, the 1506 Police Constables who were recruited newly used to earn their livelihood as school van drivers, drivers of public carriers or worked in private firms.
Their appointment orders were issued on November 6 last year.
But they have not been issued joining reports till date.
As they are unable to go back to their previous occupations, the new recruits are in a precarious condition, mentioned the memorandum.
It also urged the State authority to induct the new recruits within this month.
