Imphal, September 13 2011:
The Assam rifles, in a statement issued by PRO IGAR (S), categorically dismissed the allegations levelled by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee and Kuki Students' Organisation that Assam Rifles accepts money for safe passage of civil vehicles as totally false and baseless.
Reacting to a recent news item issued by SHDDC and KSO and published in this daily, the PRO in a statement handed to the media today pointed out that the Assam Rifles requires 70-80 truck loads of rations per week to feed its troops deployed in Manipur.
As per contract provisions the rations are required to be delivered by the contractors in their civil trucks to unit locations spread over the State, the statement informed adding that during such blockades (currently enforced by both SHDDC and UNC) since the civil trucks carrying rations for the troops are unable to move to Manipur on their own, they are brought into the State along with AR convoys.
Expressing that the mob blocking the traffic on the National Highway do not understand that the ration required to feed the troops in Manipur is so large, the PRO IGAR (S) statement also said 'it is an irony that the same mob which is so inhuman and ruthless that they do not permit even oxygen cylinders for life saving surgery in hospitals of Manipur, point their fingers at Assam Rifles for taking money for safe passage of trucks' .
