Workshop on bio-medical waste held

Speakers at a one day awareness cum workshop on 'Bio-medical waste Management and Mercury Phase-out from the health Care Sector in Manipur' held today at Classic Hotel have reiterated on the need for proper disposal and management of bio-medical waste in order to prevent hazardous impact on human.
The event was held under the joint aegis of New Delhi-based Toxics Link, Manipur Pollution Control Board and Institute of Social Research and Development.
Presenting the inaugural address, Imphal Municipal Council Chairperson N Ragumani said taking into account increasing number of hospitals and health care centres in the State it has become inevitable that bio-medical wastes generated from these establishments do not degrade the environment.
Emphasising on an effective legislation to ensure that disposal of bio-medical wastes do not have adverse affect on human being, he expressed that stringent punitive action against those found violating laid down norms will certainly generate positive response from authorities of medical centres.
during the technical session on 'bio-medical waste management in health care' held under the chairmanship of Toxics Link's Associate director Satish Sinha, Senior Environmental Engineer of Manipur Pollution Control Board Maniketan Singh elaborated on 'Status of bio-medical waste management in the region' which was followed by presentations on 'Strategy for bio-medical waste management in the State' by Medical Superintendent of JNIMS Dr Khomdon Lisam; Implementing waste management system in hospital by Dr Ragini Tyagi of Toxics Link; Lessons learnt in biomedical waste management at a tertiary care hospital by Dr Priyank Tyagi of Sri Ganga Ram Hospital; and Bio-medical waste � challenges in management in Manipur context by Dr Th Dhabali Singh, managing director of Babina Healthcare and Hospitality Industries Pvt Ltd .
