A suspected underground activist has been gunned down after a gun-fight reportedly broke out today at an area located between Thoubal and Imphal East districts even as locals of Lilong overpowered an alleged extortionist and beat him up black and blue.
A police source said an exchange of fire took place between troops of 28 Assam Rifles and unidentified armed persons at a hill range near Lemba khul (village) at around 5 am.
One pistol with a magazine containing six rounds have been recovered from the slain person.
The deceased has been identified as a former KCP cadre namely Md Akbar (22) s/o Md Ibomcha of Hatta.
Body of the deceased has been retrieved by Thoubal district police.
On the other hand, an individual armed with a small weapon was overpowered by locals at Lilong bazar in Thoubal district last night.
Timely arrival of security forces saved the life of the would be extortionist who was severely thrashed.
Information received from the spot said that at around 7 pm yesterday a youngster approached one md Sanayai, who runs a grocery shop at Lilong Bazar.
As Sanayai declined insistence that he (Sanayai) converse with 'our elders', the youngster allegedly whipped out a pistol and threatened to shoot him on the head.
On seeing the commotion bystanders rushed in and overpowered and thrashed the armed person.
Even before identity of the youth could be established a security team likely to be Assam Rifles arrived at the spot and took away the youth.
