Imphal, May 14 2023:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has asserted that the demonstration held at Jantar Mantar on May 14 is an 'SOS call' to the Government of India and highlighted three critical points for the survival of the Meetei community.
In a statement, WMC first said that the Meetei community needs Constitutional protection.
It is the only thing that can guarantee the survival of Meeteis in the face of rapid changing demography caused by the "influx of illegal migrants from the neighbouring country Myanmar", the statement said.
Secondly, WMC called for the implementation of NRC in Manipur, while adding that identifying illegal migrants will help to safeguard the indigenous communities in Manipur.
Lastly, WMC raised a call for protection of indigenous people from atrocities.
The statement claimed that illegal migrants with the support of their armed militant wings have committed atrocities against the indigenous communities systematically since 1993 and this has to be stopped at any cost.
WMC further sought the attention of all Indian citizens and the Government of India to understand the challenges at the ground situation while adding that this could lead to a National security issue.
WMC has also sought an audience with the Prime Minister and Home Minister of India in this regard.
