Imphal, February 18: The body of a Manipuri youth was today recovered from the sea near Chunnambar at Ariyankuppam in the Union Territory, even as efforts were on to trace another youth who had been washed away by the waves.

The body of 21-year-old David Singh, a student of Loyola College in Chennai was retrieved at the end of an intensive search by police and fire service personnel.

Search operations were continuing to trace the body of 22-year-old Rabi Chandra Khuman, who also hails from Manipur and is a student of Pondicherry Engineering College.

According to police, Singh, Khuman and another youth Suman Saurabh were moving along the estuary in Ariyankuppam yesterday in a boat, when they were caught in a whirlpool.

As the youth were struggling to wriggle out of the strong currents, fishermen near the estuary rushed to their help and rescued Suarabh while the other two students were washed away in the strong currents, police said.

The body of Singh was traced several metres away from the estuary.
