Fraud arrested in Karnataka, brought to Imphal

Imphal, December 16 2011: Porompat Police have arrested a person who allegedly took money from the parents of a State youth on the false promise of giving admission in a medical institute in Karnataka.

The man who hails from the south-India State has been brought to Imphal yesterday.

He has been identified as Abdul Basir Ahmad (30) s/o Mausala Patel of Kadir Chowk under Gulbarg district of Karnataka.

Abdul Basir Ahmad's aide Yusubuddin (40) s/o Nazimuddin of Islamabad of the same district, managed to escape from police.

Investigating Officer (IO) of the case, Sub-Inspector M Conquerer said, in November 2009, Marjina Begum of Manaingkhol went to Karnataka to get admitted of his son Md A Irfan (22) in a medical institute.

The mother-son duo met Abdul at the campus of Khaja Banda Nawas College and Medical Institute there, the IO said.

He added, Abdul introduced himself as the authorised agent of the institute.

Abdul also identified Yusubuddin, who was not at the time of their first meeting, as the member of the governing body of the institute.

After perusing the documents of Irfan, Abdul asked Marjina to deposit Rs 14 lakhs to the institute for admission.

As Marjina had to discuss the matter with her husband, she came back to Imphal, the IO said.

He added, Abdul even came to Imphal to deceive himself as the real agent of the institute.

The family handed over the documents of Irfan along with the required amount to Abdul for admission.

Unfortunately, Irfan was expelled from the institute after he attended classes for two days informing that he was not admitted in the institute.

As Irfan's parents lodged a complaint with the Porompat Police Station, Abdul was arrested from his home State.

Abdul Basir Ahmad was brought before CJM Imphal East yesterday and remanded to police custody for 10 days, the IO said adding that absconding Yusubuddin would also be traced soon.
