Imphal, December 10 2018:
Airports Authority Employee Union (AAEU) Imphal Branch began a three day relay hunger strike at Imphal Airport Campus, staff parking, to protest privatisation of airports.
Speaking to media persons, AAEU Imphal Branch secretary Kh Surchandra Singh explained that the relay hunger strike was called in protest against the announcement as well as plan by the Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu to privatize six major profitable airports of the country namely Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Trivandrum, Mangalore airports and Guwahati airport.
He explained that in the past, four/five airports had been transformed into public private partnership model and added that if the airports are privatised, the future of the staff will be in jeopardy.
Surchandra also claimed that if the profitable airports are privatised, the profit will all go to foreign soil instead of being circulated inside the country and explained that none of the private parties are based in India and their objective is expanding their businesses not helping the staff.
As support to the Nationwide strike called by the AAEU, the Imphal Branch also organised the relay hunger strike today, he added.
He further informed that if the Central Government and the agitating parties fail to come to an agreement within the relay hunger strike period, then on December 28 Imphal Airport will be closed down and the staff will all take mass casual leave.
If the authority concerned fails to bring a positive result even after that, then serious forms of agitation will be launched, he added.
