State's first Model UN launched at YLS

The Model United Nations, an academic simulation of the world body - United Nations, was launched for the first time in the State at Young Learners' School here with the non-profit Educational Foundation North East Director, Limabenla Jamir, attending the event.
Under the UN model students were to simulate the world body, assume on the role of world leaders � as ambassador to the UN, and present their viewpoint in debates after researching their assumed country, the NGO's policy, geography, culture, politics or history.
Addressing the media prior to the formal launch programme, Jamir said the Model UN's objective are to promote the works of the UN, to equip young people with different skills, of the art of public speaking, current affairs, make them aware of what the UN has done across the world.
'We want them to be ready to compete with the rest of the country, the rest of the world; in short it's a form of taking education outside the classroom,' said the young woman who leads the UNDP's sponsored initiative in the region.
The Model United Nations (MUN) at Young Learners' School was officially launched by JV Tusing, 2 i/c Group Centre, CRPF, Langjing as he lit the ceremonial lamp and unfurled the school's MUN flag around 10.30am Thursday.
North East India Model United Nations (NEIMUN), according to Jamir was started last year and made in road in three states � Assam Nagaland and Meghalaya.
The official launch at Young Learners' School yesterday has made the Manipur the fourth States to join the elite NGO.
NEIMUN handout said students across the world participate in over 400 Model UN conferences held worldwide.
The conference has been growing in India in the past 3 years but still new to India with just one conference held last year in Nagaland.
Jamir in her speech said over 200 young speakers from across the NE States participated in the Nagaland conference alongside speakers from UN, from model UN based in US and delegates from Australia.
She said, 'this year we hope to have the conference in Shillong, Meghalaya,' adding, 'we want to spread our wings, we want to reach out to all the states of North east and today we are here in Manipur to officially launch MUN, we hope to reach as many schools and colleges; as many young leaders across the State.
We want to identify young leaders from amongst the youths of Manipur, introduce them to MUN and prepare them to be the future young leaders of your state, of our region, of our country' .
