Imphal, February 15:
The Apunba Kanglei Shinnaibi Lup (AKSIL) has urged upon the State Government to ensure adequate supply of yarn to the weavers of the State who are providing self-employment to themselves.
Speaking to reporters at its office today, AKSIL president Th Gomti noted that weavers in Manipur have been enduring the problem of unavailability of adequate quantity of quality yarn in time.
Observing that the only Yarn Bank being run by the State Government is not functioning properly, Gomti noted that the Yarn Bank is unable to stock different varieties of yarn in adequate quantity.
As the weavers are buying yarns from the markets at higher prices, they could not earn any profit worth their labour, she noted.
Highlighting the importance of re-invigorating the Yarn Bank and to establish similar Yarn Banks in all the districts, the AKSIL president decried the failure of the State Government to take up any measure even after a memorandum had been submitted to implement a handloom policy in the State.
AKSIL has now more than 6000 weavers registered in 50 handloom cooperative societies set up under its initiative to generate self-employment for women in the State.
Gomti further informed that AKSIL has started producing handloom products with indigenous patterns and motifs.
During the press meet, she also displayed handloom products such as shawls, bed sheets, chuddar, table clothes etc with native patters and motifs like tingtombi mayek, khamen chatpa, heikai mayek, Shaikuppi mayek and leina mayek etc.
Stating that AKSIL will be taking up specific measures to promote indigenous patterns and motifs, Gomti informed that AKSIL is now supplying school uniforms made of handloom products to 8 different schools.
She further called upon the people to promote hand-loom products of the State and to cultivate a work culture so that the State becomes economically self-reliant.
