Tragedy strikes, three of a marriage party killed

Imphal, February 18:
Tragedy struck the family of a bridegroom at Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai under Imphal Police Station today when a devastating fire broke out roasting alive his grandmother, aunty and nephew.
The tragic incident occurred at around 2.10 pm today while everyone was engaged in the Bor Jatra ceremony of the bridegroom in the house of Thangjam Ongbi Nganbi (80) w/o late Thangjam Tomba of Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai.
Today happened to be the wedding day of Mahesh, one of the grandsons of Ngangbi along with Chongtham Mem Chanu of Nagamapal Singjubung Leirak.
As she was not feeling well, Ngangbi was retiring on the bed placed in the Sanamahi room of the house when one of her married daughters identified as Pebam Ongbi Pishak (40) of Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi who had also come along with her 2-year old son Dipu to attended the wedding were also present tending the sick old woman.
Pishak herself was also not keeping well.
It is said the lantern in the Sanamahi room of the house is always kept burning with Kerosene every now then.
However, instead of picking up the Kerosene bottle to fill the lantern, Pishak accidentally lifted up and poured petrol, thus leading to ignition of the fire which soon engulfed the room instantly.
At that relevant time, the band party was playing to herald the Bor Jatra of the bridegroom.
Fire services received the information about the outbreak of the fire at 2.23 pm and soon rushed in to douse the fire.
However, all the three bodies were found charred to death in the Sanamahi room.
The body of Ngangbi has been cremated at Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai while that of her daughter Pishak and grandson Dipu at Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi.
Following the unfortunate incident, the wedding programme has been postponed.
