One slain in 'encounter', another escapes

Imphal, February 26 2012:
One suspected militant was gunned down this evening at around 4.40 following a reported encounter inside a restaurant complex located at Langthabal Pal Ahanbi under Singjamei PS.
According to police report, the encounter took place between a team of Imphal West district police commandos and suspected militants.
Police said the encounter took place when two Activa Honda (grey in colour bearing registration No MN01N-9365) borne persons refused to halt when they were asked to stop at a police frisking point near Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur along NH-2 .
Instead of paying heeds to the police, the two persons attempted to drive away.
The police launched a swift chase and cornered them inside Ujala Restaurant complex located 100 metres away from the police check point, the police said.

The two persons opened gunfire on the police team.
The police retaliated and one of the two men was killed at the spot while one escaped, police said.
One 9mm pistol with eight live rounds of ammunition, two Chinese made hand grenade and two mobile phones were recovered from the possession of the slain suspected UG.
An invitation card addressed by the name of Nanao Singh was found on the person of the slain militant suspect.
The Activa Honda owner has been identified as one Keisham Somorendro while the restaurant owner is one Lukham Inao (31) son of Ibungo of Kyamgei.
Additional SP (Ops) of Imphal West, Ishak Shah, who rushed to the spot expressed suspicion that the slain man might be an underground cadre.
Spent cartridges of AK and 9mm were found at the spot.
A search operation was conducted to trace the other suspect till late in the evening, police said.
Singjamei PS picked the body and deposited at RIMS morgue for identification.
