Imphal, February 29 2024:
Taragi Cheisu chairperson and Senior Advocate Khaidem Mani has come out strongly against the recent incident of gun violence in a residential area at Wangkhei and the abduction of a police officer.
Speaking to media persons at Taragi Cheisu office at Porompat, Khaidem Mani decried the act of abducting an Addl SP who is involved in maintaining law and order and upholding human rights in the State in the midst of the crisis.
Calling the abduction wrong and distressing, he urged the concerned perpetrators to refrain from repeating such acts in the future.
Referring to the arms down stir launched by police commandos in five districts in response, the Senior Advocate opined that the Government should address their grievances swiftly.
The abduction of a police officer shows total failure of the rule of law in Manipur, he added.
Denying his allegiance to any side, he added that the police or security forces should also be impartial in their conduct including while arresting people.
He cited a recent case of arms looting at 5th IRB camp, Chingarel while claiming that the alleged perpetrators were arrested without any evidence or recovery of the firearms.
This resulted in a huge stand-off between RAF personnel and protestors in front of Cheirap Court Complex but the arrested individuals were released on bail yesterday, he pointed out.
Thus, he advised police personnel to arrest people based on valid evidence and then allow the judiciary to handle the case.
