Imphal, August 16 2023:
The American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Imphal has achieved a significant medical feat by successfully treating a 19-year-old female patient, who had been suffering from a rare form of gastrointestinal (GI) primary cancer.
The patient's condition was complicated by prior surgeries performed at another hospital, including procedures like laparotomy, bilateral oophorectomy, and infracolic omentectomy.
Despite these efforts, her biopsy revealed an uncommon GI cancer type known as "signet ring cell adenocarcinoma".
At AOI Imphal, the patient underwent eight cycles of standard chemotherapy as part of her treatment regimen.
After completion, a PET-CT scan was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.
While some improvement was noted, complete eradication of the cancer had not occurred, and further surgical intervention was deemed inappropriate at that juncture.
Under the guidance of Dr Shibashish Bhattacharyya, the dedicated medical team devised an alternative treatment strategy called chemo-immunotherapy, involving six cycles of specialised therapy.
The persistence of the medical team proved fruitful, as the patient 's condition experienced a significant improvement.
Following this positive response, she became eligible for a subsequent surgical procedure.
Dr Dhanabir Thangjam, Surgical Oncologist at AOI, successfully performed a radical surgery along with the reversal of ileostomy.
The combined efforts resulted in substantial progress for the patient.
The expertise of surgical oncologists further ensured a successfill procedure, contributing to the patient's overall well-being.
Dr Amit Dhawan, Regional COO of American Oncology Institute, Imphal, commended the collaborative efforts and patient-centric approach.
