Imphal, August 16 2023:
Tension ran high in Imphal East district today after security personnel stopped hundreds of people who attempted to march towards Gwaltabi, the village which has been deserted following an onslaught by Kuki militants.
People from different parts of the State and displaced folks from Gwaltabi took part in the rally.
The massive rally organised by Lamlai Kendra Village Volunteers Force (LKVVF) from Sabungkhok Village was stopped by State forces right after it began to move.
The rallyists pleaded with the State security personnel to let them take out their rally peacefully and see the remnants of their houses which have been burnt and vandalised by Kuki militants.
They also requested the State security forces to expedite the rehabilitation and resettlement works so that they could move to their places and restart their lives with whatever little they have.
The Manipur police, however, responded that they are not authorised to let them pass the check post of Central forces at Joilen Lamkhai and need approval from them (the Central security forces) .
The police then asked five persons from among the rallyists to talk with the Central security personnel.
Before reaching any understanding, the rallyists started proceeding towards Gwaltabi by removing the obstacles placed by the security forces and overpowering the police.
The rally forcefully reached upto Yaingangpokpi Bazar despite strong objection by the police.
At Yaingangpokpi Bazar, the police warned the people to not advance any further while the rallyists responded that they are ready to even die and they don't need permission for that.
After a few minutes of heated confrontation, the security personnel fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters while the latter pelted stones and fired slingshots toward the security personnel.
Reportedly, the male protesters were dispersed after minutes of confrontation but the womenfolk made further attempts to march towards Gwaltabi Village.
Later, the State police controlled the situation after negotiating with the womenfolk.
There was no report of any injuries and casualties during the confrontation.
