TRUGPU, Nambol retained the Shirui Lily Cup football title after edging out YSWA, Utlou 5-4 via the tie-breaker in the final of the tournament's 27th edition at the TNL ground, Ukhrul today.
TRUGPU was cruising along comfortably with a 2-0 lead before two goals by the opponents late in the match extended the game to the penalty shoot-out.
While YSWA penalty takers converted two and the same number of shots were saved by the TRUGPU custodian, one sailed over the crosspiece compared to three successful strikes by the TRUGPU players from the spot, one saved and one missing the upright.
Earlier, T Shamo shot the title holders into the lead within 24 minutes into the game before the same player doubled the advantage from a penalty award in the closing seconds of the first half.
Undeterred by the goal deficit, the Utlou forward line constantly troubled the TRUGPU defenders before cracking the rivals with an 80th minute goal from Ajit and then ensured the match was not gifted to the rivals on a platter with the equaliser in the 82nd minute.
However, brilliance of the TRUGPU custodian and composure of the penalty takers helped the nambol side retain the title and walk home richer with the top cash prize of Rs 50,000.The runners-up had to be content with the Rs 30,000 prize.
T Shamo, who emerged as the top scorer of the tournament, organised under the aegis of Ukhrul District Sports Association, with five goals was awarded Rs 2000, while Chinghanring of WSA was declared player of the tournament carrying cash amount of Rs 3000 and RK Ramkuipam of VYC bagged the best goalkeeper award of same amount.
Sports Minister N Biren graced the final match cum closing ceremony as the chief guest.
Other dignitaries present at the occasion included PDA Chairman Dr Kh Loken and AMFA secretary L Ranjit Roy.
The tournament participated by 15 teams began
on March 14 .
