According to information from the local people, the three well loaded trucks were seen arriving from the direction of Nongpok Sanjenbam road upon reaching the actual incident spot they heard loud blast with flames rising instantly.
Local eye witnesses also claimed to have observed movement of 6/7 unidentified persons near the vehicles apart from informing that three persons were seen walking away from the scene towards the same road the vehicles arrived after the trucks had caught fire.
The trio are suspected to have driven the vehicles before the act of arson was committed.
Even as the front portion of the trucks including the tyres and engines were up in flames people from nearby villages were seen off-loading the cement bags besides laying their hands on all available vehicle parts.
A combined team of Imphal East district police and assam Rifles personnel arrived at the spot at around 5.20 pm to control the situation.

On enquiry, police sources informed that the trucks were hijacked by two armed youths from around Takhel area in Imphal East district.
Upon seeing the three drivers walking along the Takhel road with tears in their eyes, locals stopped a passenger carrier and directed them to reach the capital city at the earliest, the police maintained.
While the drivers have reached the BRTF camp located at Lamphelpat area, further investigation would be resumed tomorrow, the sources said while adding that the three vehicles are yet to be retrieved from the incident site.
