Imphal, September 03 2018:
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has strongly condemned the resumption of office by Manipur University Vice-chancellor, Adya Prasad Pandey on September 1 despite an inquiry pending against him.
A press release issued by NEFIS today demanded the VC's resumption pf duties to be immediately declared null and void by the MHRD.
It should be known that the VC was sent on leave last month under huge pressure from the MU community which demanded an inquiry against the irregularities committed by his office, it added.
However, despite the pending inquiry, Pandey has resumed office.
Not only has he unlawfully occupied the VC office, but he has also taken up vindictive actions against the MU community by banning MUTA and MUSA.
Terming the action as appalling and undemocratic, NEFIS claimed that it sees MHRD's connivance with the VC behind such a bold step.
It added that the attitude of both the Union and State Governments has been pathetic since the very beginning of the democratic movement against the VC.
Even after sending the VC on leave under huge pressure, the State Government resorted to brutal measures to curb the movement.
A MUSU councillor was arrested by Manipur Police on August 4.The arrest was followed by the dismantling of the dais which had been erected at the site where protests had been going on for more than 2 months.
Also, it was alleged that Facebook posts were taken down, which amounted to a massive crackdown on the movement of the MU community, it continued.
NEFIS strongly condemned the recent developments at MU which are connected with the Government's resolve to curb the democratic movement at MU and mentioned that it stands in solidarity with MU community and resolves to continue its struggle even amidst crackdown.
It also called upon the larger civil society to extend support to the struggle in order to reclaim the university for the people and especially for saving the future of education in the State.
