Kathak-Utsav begins on grand note

Imphal, March 02 2016: 'Kathak-Utsav', a performing dance festival of Kathak dance began today at Manipur State Film Development Society, Palace Gate, Imphal organized by Kathak Kendra, New Delhi (National Institute of Kathak Dance) in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), Imphal and Culture and Art Affairs, Manipur.

Kathak-Utsav is organized in various parts of the country with a view to bring forward the best works in Kathak dance.

It is a celebration of the performing arts that brings together legendary artists, dance lovers, scholars and experts through dance performances and artistic interactions.

The inaugural function was attended by Vice-chairman of JNMDA Prof H Tombi as the chief guest while Consultant, Govt of Manipur Dr RK Nimai was the functional president.

Commissioner, Art and Culture, Govt of Manipur K Radhakumar, Director of Kathak Kendra Sushmita Gosh, Director of JNMDA and Director of Art and Culture were the guests of honour.

There is need of exposure for traditional art forms of the State to further evolve and survive in this changing world, stated Prof H Tombi.

But in recent times Manipuri dance form has made some strides in exposing the dance form to other parts of the globe.

RK Nimai stated that culture evolves with time and all art forms have to adapt and overcome certain changes without losing its essence.

All over the country western art form has made an impact, to save traditional art forms artistes have to search for means and ways to thrive.

He added that the two day Kathak-Utsav is an opportunity for artistes of the State to understand other art forms.

"Art and artistes can survive and sustain the art form when the public extend their support," Nimai stated.

Radhakumar expressed that artistes attending Kathak-Utsav can compare their art forms with contemporary Manipuri art forms to further enhance and develop the existing art.

'Vasantonmaad' created and presented by Post Diploma students of Kathak Kendra and a solo recital by Guru Rajendra Kumar Gangani were presented during the inaugural session .
