MNP+ organises awareness programme

A one-day awareness programme on 'Audio Visual cum Exhibition' was jointly organised by Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+), Imphal and Sevak Samaj Manipur State Branch under the sponsorship of Research Extension Centre Central Silk Board at the Yaiskul Hiruhanba conference hall of MNP+ today.
Delivering the key-note address, general secretary of Bharat sevak Samaj Manipur State Branch H Sanamatum presented a detailed account of various sericulture-related projects launched by the Central Government.
Informing that climatic condition and soil texture of Manipur is highly suitable for undertaking sericulture activities and that Government of India has approved a total allocation of Rs 7129.75 lakhs for development of sericulture during the 11th Five Year Plan period, he also stated that Rs 104 lakhs has been earmarked for sericulture projects in Manipur.
Speaking as the chief guest, Scientist-D Central Silk Board Imphal, Dr K Chaoba advised MNP+ network functionaries to form and registered self help groups of 20 males and 20 females each for undertaking sericulture related projects.
Noting that Manipuri women are naturally gifted weavers, Dr Chaoba exuded confidence that on proper utilisation of various sericulture-related projects the State's financial situation would improve significantly.
general secretary of MNP+ Salam Udita presenting the presidential address informed that with about 700 HIV positive women in the State facing an uphill task to earn livelihood on their own the focus is on rearing/reeling silk worms (muga) to generate income, as an alternate source of income generation.
expressing hope that authorities concerned would extend all possible assistance, Udita affirmed that training programmes for women weavers would be taken up in a phased manner in all the districts.
