Imphal, September 26 2013:
With the replacement of Principal in-charge Th Kulachandra and a joint meeting between the new incumbent, faculty members and students in the presence of locals, the uneasy tension gripping Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT), Takyelpat has subsided.
Asserting that order has been restored at MIT after the replacement of Principal in-charge Prof RK Hemakumar was later authenticated by the agitating students who announced suspension of their agitation.
Speaking to mediapersons at an MIT classroom room, Prof Hemakumar, who is also the Dean of students' Welfare (MU) informed to have assessed the prevailing situation hours after the Manipur University Vice Chancellor issued an order for replacing Th Kulachandra, one of the demands of the agitating students.
Conveying that he also held talks with the Institute's faculty members and administrative staff to understand their grievances, Prof Hemakumar said after consulting representatives of the locality, where the student hostellers were taking shelter at a community hall after their eviction from the MIT hostels.
Conveying gratitude to the locals for taking care of the dislodged hostellers, the Principal in-charge also maintained that most of the hostellers have returned to their respective rooms since evening yesterday.
Meanwhile, interacting with the mediapersons after a joint meeting with the locals, some MIT students confirmed suspending their agitation taking into account MU authorities replacing Th Kulachandra with RK Hemakumar.
Informing that normal class would resume with immediate effect, they nevertheless cautioned of re-launching their agitation in case MU authorities do not honour their demand for an inquiry against Kulachandra's alleged misconduct as well as forcible crackdown against the peacefully gathered students.
Strongly decrying the former Principal in-charge of instigating the police force to baton charge and fire tear-gas on the students who were peacefully agitating to highlight their grievances, the students also contended that four laptops and some mobile phones were found missing from the girls' hostel.
Moreover the hostel rooms were found littered with cigarette buds and ashes, they claimed demanding that the demand for inquiry also cover the latter issues.
