Imphal, April 14 2016 :
Citing engagement of migrant labourers who do not possess valid identity proof documents and other necessary documents, the JCILPS has banned the construction work of a tunnel at Kanghu Chingjin which is a part of Thoubal Multipurpose Project.
A team of JCILPS volunteers led by its office secretary Jitendra Ningomba and assistant convenor (organisation) Hayatur Rahaman went to the work site today and verified the migrant labourers today.
Altogether 33 migrant labourers belonging to Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand are engaged by Hyderabad based Sushee Infra and Mining Ltd in the tunnel construction work.
Out of them 19 were found at the work site today, Jitendra told media persons.
Even though most of the migrant labourers hold identity cards issued by the AE or EE of IFCD, they could not produce any document required under relevant labour laws.
Quoting one officer of Sushee Infra and Mining Ltd, Jitendra said that the firm has applied to the Labour Department seeking licences but no licences have been issued so far.
As such, JCILPS has banned the tunnel construction work until the migrant labourers are issued necessary licences, he continued.
Hayatur Rahaman said that the migrant labourers who do not possess documents as required under the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act 1979 have been handed over to Lamlai police station.
"This is not our duty but the growing concern to protect indigenous peoples compels us to verify migrant labourers", Hayatur said.
All development projects taken up by either the State Government or the Government of India are always welcomed but execution of the projects should comply with relevant labour laws, he added.
