RIMS sexual assault case : ECG technician remanded to judicial custody

Special Judge, POCSO, Imphal West today remanded RIMS ECG technician Thokchom Suraj to judicial custody remand today.
Thokchom Suraj (36) s/o Kulla of Keishamthong Moirang Ningthou Leirak, was produced before the Court early morning today by a team of Lamphel PS, under very tight security following his completion of five days in police remand, along with another prayer for judicial remand.
The IO submitted that a regular case was registered based on a complaint lodged by the mother of the victim stating that her daughter, who was admitted to RIMS for some test due to fever and dysentery, was sexually assaulted by the accused inside the ECG room on the intervening night of October 2 and October 3 .
Based on the complaint, Suraj was arrested by Lamphel police and taken into five days police custody.
During the period, he admitted to the charges levelled against him, the IO said, adding that he had also revealed that on the day of the incident, he had attended a marriage ceremony of one senior doctor and as such he was slightly drunk.
He narrated that the victim, along with her mother, came to the EGC room for the test but he prevented the mother from coming inside the room and instead took the victim alone inside the room for examination.
The IO continued that the accused revealed that he used a towel to cover the eyes of the victim during the crime but he stopped once he realised that what he was doing is wrong.
He disclosed that he kept the victim inside the EGC room for around 30 minutes, the IO submitted adding that Forensic Department of RIMS also opined in its medical examination report that signs of sexual assault on the minor victim were found and as such, prayed for judicial custody remand of the accused for smooth investigation of the case.
The Court, satisfied with the submission, remanded Suraj to judicial custody till October 22.On the other hand, the main entrance gate of RIMS remained closed for several hours today as a part of the security measures to prevent any kind of attempt by JAC and family members of the victim minor to storm the institution.
All vehicles coming towards the main gate were diverted towards other alternative routes.
Iron barricades were erected and a large number of Lamphel police personnel and RIMS security were also seen deployed in front of the main gate.
