In a significant ruling, Gauhati High Court has asked the State Government to pay Rs 75,000 as compensation to one Ningthoujam Pishakmacha Devi, whose health has been deteriorating after police assaulted her at Pheija Leitong way back in March 2, 1996.Chief Justice BK Roy and Justice T Vaiphei in their Division bench sitting at Imphal passed the verdict today.
The Court asked the Government to pay the amount within three months, said advocate A Bimol, who appeared on behalf of the victim, Ningthoujam Pishakmacha Devi (35) daughter of N Amujao Singh of Pheija Leitong.
On March 2, 1996, a large number of people came out to protest the killing of a student, identified as Netaji by Police Commandos.
Police resorted to lathi-charge and lobbing tear gas shells to disperse the angry protestors.
Pishakmacha, who did not join the protest but was watching the scene from her Ingkhol, was allegedly beaten up severely by a team of police personnel who rushed in, at her own compound.
Since then she has been undergoing treatment spending huge amount of money at various hospitals.
The ruling of the Principal Seat of the High Court came after perusing the report submitted by Civil Judge, Senior Division which inquireed into the matter at the directive of Division Bench Court.
