Imphal, August 18, 2012:
As of now, there is no change in the position of the United Naga Council (UNC) regarding 96 hours total bandh which would come into effect from August 20 midnight.
Talking with TSE, UNC president L Adani said that they have not considering any option of suspending the bandh.
However, the UNC has made due considerations not to pose any hurdle when students of Manipur fleeing Maharasktra, Karnataka and other States arrive in the State.
Those genuine students who are coming back to Manipur because of the situation in Maharastra and Karnataka would be allowed free passage after verification.
But those individuals taking advantage of this let up would not allowed to pass through, Adani said.
Necessary measures have been taken up to station volunteers of UNC ANSAM at Mao Gate so as to verify students coming back to the State on account of the prevailing situation in different cities of mainland India.
In order to avoid any disturbance to movement of students who are verified by volunteers, their vehicles would be affixed labels.
The UNC has not received any positive response from the Government which would vindicate suspension of the bandh.
The bandh may be called off in case any positive response is received in the meantime, Adani added.
Notably, several civil organisations have been appealing not to impose any bandh or blockade in view of the unfolding situation in many States and cities of mainland India which is compelling students and professionals of the North East region to return to their home States in thousands.
