A huge rally organized by the Meitei National Front was staged today to mark the 274th anniversary of Puya Meithaba (burning of the holy scriptures of the Meiteis).
The rally participated by around 5000 people started from Hatta Kangjeibung and after passing through Minuthong proceeded towards Khoyathong, Nagamapal, Wahengbam Leikai, Keishampat and headed towards Gate no .2 of Kangla where the holy scriptures of the Meiteis are burnt may years back.
At Kangla, the rallyists paid floral tributes in memory of the Maichous and Mainous (eminent scholars) followed by a public meeting.
President of MNF, Ch Akaba, Director of Education (S) Th Shamungou, former minister RU MINthing and S Iboyaima were the president, chief guest and guest of honor at the meeting.
The gathering also rose as one to condemn the burning of the Puya.
The Meitei National Front has been observing the day since 1978 along with representatives from other communities.
People cutting across community line and from all the other districts turned up for the occasion today.
Tangkhuls, Kabuis, Marams and Manipur Muslims took part in the rally.
