As in other parts of the World, the International Day of Older Persons was observed today at Manipur Press Club under the aegis of the Pioneer Health Club.
During the observance, the Pioneer Health Club also felicitated six elderly persons above 80 years of age who have outstanding achievements in various fields.
The elderly persons who were felicitated on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons were RK Shitaljit, Ngathingkhui Roleng, Yumkham Chandrakala, Dr Danyakhai Vaiphei, MA Rehman and Thoudam Kalachand.
A memento and shawl were presented to each of the elderly persons.
In accordance to the resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted on December 14, 1990, October 1 is being observed as International Day of Older Persons every year all over the world.
This year the Day is being observed under the theme "Older Persons��a new power for development".
The Pioneer Health Club which organised today's observance was established in 2006.The Club has plans to set up recreation space, gym, garden, park and health units to keep up the mental and physical health of older persons.
Today's observance was graced by YAS Minister N Biren, MLA Ng Bijoy, MLA Kunjeshore and writer MK Binodini as presidium members.
On the occasion, the All Manipur Senior Citizens' Welfare Association in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association health camp at Sana Janmasthan Club, Moirangningthou Leirak.
During the camp, about 140 elderly persons above 60 years of age were examined besides distributing medicines to needy patients.
