Troops of 33 Assam Rifles under Red Shield Division claimed to have rescued two sisters who were abducted by KCP (MC) cadres from the general area of Keibul-Ithing of Bishnupur district.
Acting on an information regarding detention of two women in the area by UG elements in connection with extortion of money, the troops swung into action to nab the UGs and rescued the two women, said a release issued by PIB (DW).
During the operation, it added, the troops detected an individual moving suspiciously.
The SF team asked the person to identify himself.
however he fired at the column and fled into thick grass and phumdis.
The individual managed to escape taking cover of dense phumdis and grasses, it added.
Search of nearby huts however led to the rescue of the two abducted women identified as Thangjam Ongbi Subarani alias Ichan (42) w/o Thangjam Ajit of Sagolband Thingom Lekai, Imphal West and Oinam Ongbi Chanam alias Dilabi (47), w/o Oinam Bijendro of Heirangoithong Maibam Lekai, Imphal West.
The abducted women are sisters of one Ajit working as Under Secretary in the State Finance Department, it claimed.
The women were summoned to Moirang bazar to pay extortion money against a demand of Rs 10 lakh served on them by the cadres of KCP (MC) on January 24, the press release said.
No one was however present at the designated site to collect the money, it said and added that they were then contacted on mobile phone and asked to proceed near Keibul village.
The money was delivered by them at 2.30 pm on January 28 to one unidentified man accompanied by one woman who then kidnapped them at gun point.
After being blindfolded, they were taken in an autorickshaw and made to walk towards a fishing hut located within the phum and kept captive there.
Subsequently, additional money was demanded by the cadres with a stipulation that the same be paid by 1 pm on January 29 failing which the ladies were threatened to kill, the press release said.
Timely and swift action by 33 Assam Rifles foiled their plans and the ladies were rescued.
The ladies were handed over to family members.
MLA Bijoy Koijam, who is related to the kidnapped women also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Red Shield Division for the timely action.
The unidentified women involved in the kidnapping is suspected to be one Chouba alias Devla w/o Sham Kanbai (25) of Keibul Lamjao Mayai Lekai who was earlier arrested by 33 Assam Rifles on April 29, 2010 for involvement in extortion activities, the release said.
