Red Shield Division rescues kidnapped women

Imphal, January 29, 2011:
Two women who were kidnapped by cadres of KCP (MC) were rescued in an operation carried out by the troops of 33 Assam Rifles in Keibul and Ithing areas of Bishnupur District.
Acting on information regarding extortion money being paid by some women, troops of 33 Assam Rifles commenced search of the area at around 10.30.A person fired at the column of AR and fled into thick grass and phum when he was challenged to identify himself.
He escaped taking advantage of the dense phum and grass as cover.
They search in the nearby huts among the phum and found the two women.
They were identified as Mrs Thangjam Ongbi Subarani @ Ichan (42) wife of Thangjam Ajit of Sagolmang Thingom Lekai, Imphal West and Oinam Ongbi Chanam @ Dilabi (47) wife of Oinam Bijendro of Heirongoithong Maibam Leikai, Singjamei, Imphal West.
They are siblings of Ajit working as Under Secretary in the Finance Department of Manipur Government.
The women were asked to come to Moirang Bazar to pay the extortion money against a demand of Rs 10 lakh served on them by cadres of KCP (MC) on January 24.When they reached Moirang Bazar, they were contacted on mobile phone and asked to proceed near Keibul village.
The money was delivered by them at around 4.30 pm on January 28 to one unidentified man accompanied by one woman who then kidnapped them at gun point.
After being blindfolded, they were taken in an autorickshaw and made to walk towards a fishing hut located within the phum and kept captive there.
Subsequently, additional money was demanded by the cadres with a stipulation that the same be paid by 1 pm today failing which the ladies were to be killed.
Timely and swift action by 33 Assam Rifles foiled their plans and the ladies were rescued.
The ladies were handed over to their family members.
Mr Bijoy Koijam MLA who is related to the kidnapped ladies also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Red Shield Division for their timely action in rescuing the ladies.
The unidentified women involved in the kidnapping is suspected to be Chaoba @ Devla wife of Shamkanhai (25) years of Keibul Lamjao Mayai Leikai who was earlier arrested by 33 Assam Rifles on April 29, 2010 for involvement in extortion activities.
