Imphal, March 14 2014 : Undeterred by the snubbing she suffered at the hands of the BJP, Oinam Indira has decided to fight the Lok Sabha election in Inner Manipur P/C as as independent candidate.

Speaking at a gathering held at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound, Ibudhou Thangjing Mandhon Committee member Y Manihar announced that Oinam Indira would fight for the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat as as independent candidate.

Indira from Thoubal Ningombam contested in the last Assembly election of 2012 in Thoubal Assembly segment against Chief Minister O Ibobi.

40 year old Indira completed MA (Education) from Manipur University.

She is a recipient of several awards including NCC's All Round Best Cadet Governor Gold Medal, International Duke of Edinburgh Award and UNDP Award 2000 for her works on eradication of poverty.

Speaking at the gathering where majority of the participants were women, Indira admitted that it would not be an easy task to compete against big political parties.

To contest the Lok Sabha election was a collective decision taken after nine rounds of consultative meetings held with a cross-section of people, Indira said.

Claiming that people are her party and women her base, Indira said that negligence of women and disunity among women were manifested when the State has been able to send only one woman MP to the Parliament till date.

Without taking his name but in a veiled attack on the Chief Minister, Indira said that Irom Sharmila who has been struggling for the mass selflessly is being looked down upon from a political platform.

"People will see what I can do for Sharmila in case I get elected as MP," Indira said.

She also promised to build a political platform for women, formulate a youth policy and bring out a vision document for handloom and handicraft development in 35 items.
