The no confidence motion moved by seven out of the eight opposition councillors of the Mayang Imphal Municipal Council against its chairperson N Nilamani Singh would be discussed on January 30.The executive officer of the Council has issued a notification in this regard.
The Mayang Imphal Municipal Council was upgraded from Nagar Panchayat in Aug, 2002.Out of the 14 councillors in the Council which include one Government nominee, ten of them belong to the Congress.
Of the remaining three one each belongs to Federal, MSCP and Independent.
Though the chairperson has already been reduced to a minority as there are only four members supporting him, he has not yet resigned from the post.
Talking to reporters today, Nilamani expressed confidence that the motion would be defeated during the Jan 30 hearing.
He claimed that all the ten Congress councillors are still on his side.
Such a motion had also been defeated when put up during March last year as the councillors have full confidence in his integrity, he said.
He disclosed that MAHUD Department under the National Slum Development programme had sanctioned an amount of Rs 2,86,390 for street lighting and construction of market sheds in Mayang Imphal Municipal Council areas.
But when the fund was released, some of the councillors urged him to distribute the amount among themselves instead of utilizing is for the stated purpose, he alleged and hastened to add that he was deadly against the idea.
When a meeting was finally convened to discuss and finalize the various developmental works to be taken up under the programme, the seven councillors who have moved the no confidence motion against him were conspicuous by their absence, he accused.
Replying to a question, Nilamani clarified that there was no forgery in the withdrawal of the case filed against ten employees of the Council who have been allegedly appointed in violation of the Municipality Act.
Whether the signature of the Councillors have been forged or not as has been alleged can be proved by legal expert concerned, he said, asserting that the appointment of the said employees have been done as per an order.
He also brushed aside the allegation that the Council had allotted land to private parties.
Highlighting on the various developmental works being taken up by the Council, Nilamani said that work on construction of sheds for women vendors of the Mayang Imphal Bazar is currently going on under Integrated Development of Medium and Small Town.
