Imphal, June 11:
Unidentified persons gunned down a betel leaf trader near the Baruni Road Andro Kharam village around 10 kms north-west of the Yairipok police station at around 12.20 this noon.
Reports said Ram Narayan Gupta (40) of Uttar Pradesh's Hanumanganj presently staying at a rented house in Paona bazar was gunned down by his assailants while he was on his way to business.
A PTI report said that the assailants are suspected to be Muslim militants.
Gupta who had been staying in the State for about tern years went on his bicycle to Andro side at around 6.30 am to sell his merchandise as usual.
He was shot at his neck by the gunmen.
The bullet penetrated through his head.
He died on the spot.
Police said that three unidentified motorcycle borne gunmen attacked him.
On receipt of information a police team led by DIG Range II V Zathang and Thoubal SP rushed to the area and conducted search operations.
No arrest has been reported.
Police recovered one empty case of a 9 mm pistol from the site of the crime.
The body has been deposited at the Lilong PHC for conducting post mortem.
Meanwhile, autopsy has been conducted on the body of Rajinder Dev (35) of Saiton Nganunkon at the RIMS morgue today.
Rajinder was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Kumbi Uchanmakhong yesterday morning.
Post mortem has also been conducted on the bodies of KYKL (K) cadres Laithangbam Kesho alias James of Utlou Mayai Leikai and Maninganba alias Biranjoy of Phubala at the Lilong PHC today.
The two were shot death by unidentified gunmen at Gwarok Khunthak under Yairipok police station on June 10 night.
In the meantime, RIMS morgue officials have decided to hand over the unidentified bullet ridden body recovered on June 8 from the Imphal river near Doljang village to Municipality authorities on June 13 for cremation if the family did not turn up by June 12.
