Kohima, June 11 (UNI):
The South Nagas Unions of Nagaland State (SNUNS) has appealed to Meitei organizations and NGOs of Manipur not to interfere in the Indo-Naga issue for the greater interest of the Nagas as well as the Meiteis.
SNUNS general secretary C Daipao in a statement yesterday appealed to All Manipur United Clubs Organization (AMUCO), All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), human rights activists and other NGOs to cooperate with the Nagas as a good neighbour for their welfare and finding a permanent solution to the vexed Indo-Naga problem.
Stating that Meiteis have every right to oppose the extension of ceasefire between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) if it affected their land and people, Daipao said and asked as to why they opposed the ceasefire extension when it would remain confined only in the Naga inhabited areas.
Alleging that Meiteis never raised their voice for the Nagas of Manipur for the last 53 years, he said they (Meiteis) have now suddenly woke up and tried to sabotage the peace process as they want to suppress the Nagas of Manipur.
He further said that the Indo-Naga issue was between Indians and Nagas and that Meiteis had nothing to do with the Indo-Naga problem.
It may be remembered that the NSCN (IM) in its unsigned press release issued on June 6, 2001 had charged the AMUCO and others of Manipur with being ignorant of their own history and political reality adding that when they (NSCN-IM) were talking with the Government of India, AMUCO (Meiteis) should not bother.
