Under a short term plan, Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has started dredging the river beds and drains flowing into Loktak lake.
Being carried out under strict instructions from the Chief Minister to all MLAs concerned to monitor the work, the first phase would cover all the rivers and drains passing through Oinam Assembly Constituency.
Starting from Karong which is the confluence of Nambul and Oinam rivers, dredging would be carried upto Meichakpi Patlen covering a distance of about two and half kilometres.
On the upstream of Karong, dredging would also be carried out upto a distance of half a kilometres.
Excavator machines would be used for the purpose.

As for Nambul river, the work would cover half a kilometre on the upstream of Karong besides clearing Khujailok stream which passes through Yumnam Khunou, the source informed, adding that the short term action plan would also cover removal of Phumdis growing along the drainage of Yangoi Macha.
As a matter of fact, dredging of the river bed of Oinam has already begun since June 28 and so far a distance of 500 metres has been covered.
Inspecting the progress of the work along with a team of mediapersons today, MLA of Oinam Assembly Constituency Dr I Ibohalbi said dredging of river beds of Oinam and Nambul as well as clearing of the Khunjailok stream would solve problem of flooding low lying areas during rainy season every year.
The MLA also appealed to the people for co-operation and support in the ongoing developmental works.
It is said people of the local area including volunteers of United Volunteers' Organisation, Oinam have been extending their support to the employees of LDA in dredging of the river beds.
On the other hand, the MLA today handed over three water pump sets issued to his Constituency in connection with the drought prevailing in the State to the people.
The three water pump sets were handed over to the pradhans of Irengband Gram Panchayat, Ngaikhong Gram Panchayat and Toubul Gram Panchayat.
