Agri Dept assesses crop damage

A team of Agriculture Department officials led by Director S Gunija Devi today assessed the paddy fields damaged by hailstone a couple of days back in Heirok Assembly Constituency of Thoubal district.
Hundred percent of 50 hectare paddy field in Ukhongsang area was affected by the hailstone.
All paddy plants were found destroyed by the hailstone.
Cent percent of the 50 hectare paddy field in Nongpok Lourembam Mamang Leikai was ruined while fifty percent of the Maning Leikai field was badly affected by the hailstone.
About 40 percent of the 10 hectare paddy field in Langmeithet was affected and about 40 to 50 percent of the 30 hectare paddy field in Nongpok Sekmai was affected by the calamity.
Speaking to reporters after the damage assessment tour, Director of Agriculture Dept, Gunija said necessary measures would be taken up by the department to provide relief to the farmers.

Relief measures to the affected farmers from the Dept's side would be considered after discussing it with officials concerned, she added.
Provision of making seasonal crops like beans and mustards available to the farmers is also coming up.
The affected farmers, who already were staring at a grim harvest from the start of the season, said they are wordless when another tragedy struck them.
They urged the Govt to extend all possible help to them.
Officials including Dy Director (Soil Chemist), Ph Rajendra Singh; District Agriculture Officer, Thoubal, Th Gyaneshwor; Cotton Development Officer, H Ibomcha Singh; EO (Agri) L Gojendra Singh and other staff of the department took part in the field assessment exercise today.
The paddy fields in Heirok AC of Thoubal district were ruined by the hailstone that lashed the area for about half an hour on Oct 18.An elderly man was also killed in a wall collapse.
