Imphal, October 20 2014:
Disappointed with the statement made by the Meetei National Front (MNF) earlier this month, ACOAM Lup has expressed concern over the controversy pertaining to the exact date of burning of Puya.
Speaking to mediapersons at the press conference held at ACOAM Lup office at Lamphelpat, ACOAM Lup General Secretary Sanjit Soraisam asserted that MNF, in its press release, had lambasted Pandit Achouba and Maichou who were present at the seminar on Puya Mei Thaba held at Kangla in 2008 .
The seminar was attended by representatives of all clubs, organisations along with many scholars.
After an open discussion, a unanimous resolution was taken on observation of Puya Mei Thaba Numit on the 17th day of Mera month of Manipuri lunar calendar.
Since then, the day is observed every year as the Puya Mei Thaba day by all clubs and organisations of Manipur except MNF, he clarified.
Nevertheless MNF in its release remarked that Pandit Achouba and Maichou are the modern Pandits who have woken up after 30 years of sleep.
It also stated that MNF has been observing the Puya Mei Thaba day on the 23rd day of Wakching month of Manipuri lunar calendar.
It further stated that it would continue to observe the day on the 23rd of Wakching claiming it to be the exact date of the incident, he added.
He further stated that the difference would not have arisen if MNF had participated in the seminar.
The press conference was also attended by ACOAM Lup president Kshetrimayum Somorendro, ACOAM vice president Heikrujam Memtombi Leima, ACOAM executive member Mohindro Naorem and ACOAM secretary H Sanouba.
