Imphal, January 15, 2012:
The All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO), which has been campaigning in the hills for free and fair polls since the last eight months, will hold a prayer session for Christian candidates in Imphal on Monday.
Of 60 legislators in Manipur assembly, 20 are from the five hill districts of Ukhrul, Tamengong, Churachandpur, Chandel and Ukhrul predominately inhabited by Christians.
Political parties have intensified their campaign for the January 28 assembly polls to woo voters.
For the first time in the history of Christianity in Manipur, AMCO, an umbrella body of all Church denominations of the state, will hold the prayer session for Christian candidates at Believers' Church at Langol Laimanai in Imphal West, said AMCO president Rev.S Prim Vaiphei.
At the programme , Church leaders will advice candidates not to indulge in poll malpractices and bribery, Vaiphei said.
He added, "Christian candidates would also be blessed upon to ensure they work sincerely for the welfare of people with a clean heart".
AMCO, a non-political organization, kicked off its pastors and church leaders' advocacy meetings for free and fair polls on June 24 in Chandel district last year.
Since then, it has organized 14 meetings.
During the meetings, Amco advised church leaders to remain neutral and work for fair polls.
It has already appealed to underground organizations not to meddle in the election.
