Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch is set to provide loan of Rs 10,000 to 50 selected widows whose hus-bands had been killed by security forces or unknown miscreants.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch general secretary Dr Y Mohen said that no interest would be charged for this loan.
He said that the loan amount would be distributed to selected widows on February 20 .
Saying that the scheme has been initiated with an aim to support these widows, Dr Mohen said that every loanee must repay Rs 500 per month.
For the first phase of this scheme, 25 beneficiaries each would be selected through recommendations from EEVFAM and Manipur Conflict Widow Organisation, he added.
Saying that Rs 5 lakh has been earmarked for the said scheme, Dr Mohen said that Rs 3 lakh was donated by Irom Chanu Sharmila, Rs One lakh by the wife of late Yengkhom Krishnadas and the remaining Rs One lakh was contributed by Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch.
He added that a project which would benefit 100 widows would be launched soon under the aegis of Indian Red Cross Society.
EEVFAM secretary Y Edina and MCWO secretary Farida Begum, who were present at the press conference thanked Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch for introducing the scheme.
They said that a joint meeting of all the widow organisa- tions would be held on February 15 .
