Imphal, August 09 2016:
Anti-AFSPA campaigner Irom
Chanu Sharmila pleaded for her
unconditional release during
her Court appearance today.
However, she was released on bail only after she
furnished a PR bond of Rs
10,000 before the Chief Judi-
cial Magistrate, Imphal West.
A large number of report-
ers and correspondents of
newspapers based outside the
State and in other countries
too descended at Imphal to
cover the story of Sharmila
breaking her fast.
Sharmila was brought
from JNIMS security ward
by a large number of police
personnel to Cheirap Court at
around 10.30 am regarding
the ongoing trial of the case
pending against her under
Section 309 IPC.
During the trial hearing of
the case, three prosecution
witnesses - woman vendor
Haobam Tombi, Senior
Medical Officer (CMO
Imphal West) Dr Oinam
Anjana Devi and City police
station ASI L Ranjitasana -
deposed before the Court.
During the hearing,
Sharmila pleaded the Court to
release her unconditionally as
she wished to end her mara-
thon hunger strike.
She also requested the
Court to give time and place
to interact with the media.
After perusing her prayer,
the Court permitted her to
interact with the media for 30
minutes considering her sta-
tus of being an activist.
The Court also granted her
bail on PR bond of Rs 10,000 and asked her to appear before the Court on
August 23.
The three-hour long trail hearing lasted up to 1.30 pm.
Since morning, a large number of media persons belonging
to different State, National and International media houses
gathered at Cheirap Court complex.
Although, police made arrangements as per Court order,
the press conference could not be held at Cheirap Court
complex due to overcrowding.
Imphal West district police then took away Sharmila to
JNIMS complex at around 2 pm.
