Imphal, February 05 2018:
Two personnel of Assam Rifles Keithelmanbi HQs were injured in a twin hand grenade blast inside Mapal Kangjeibung Polo ground at around 5.30 pm today.
According to information from the spot, the personnel of 6 AR were collecting the items used during the 15th Director General Assam Rifles Sentinel Cup Equestrian Championship 2019 and the 9th Junior State Equestrian Championship (which is currently being organised at the venue by 6th AR under the aegis of IGAR South along with Manipur Equestrian Association) after the sports event wrapped up, when suspected UG militants hurled two hand grenades which exploded one after the other (within a distance of 5 meters from one another) injuring two personnel of 6 AR.
The blasts occurred right under the audition gallery of the polo ground located on the northern side, where a temporary tent has been set up by the AR for those who used to stay back for looking after the materials kept for the equestrian championship.
The two injured AR personnel, identified as Warrant Officer Ulapkumar Pal (52) s/o (L) Nanda Bahadur of Aizawl and Rifleman Mon Bahadur Limbu (30) s/o (L) Dhanaraj Limbu of Mangan Sikkim, were rushed to RIMS with splinter injuries.
Ulapkumar sustained injuries on his right shoulder and both his legs, while Mon Bahadur sustained injuries on his right knee.
Soon after the blast, a large number of State police personnel, led by high ranking police officers, rushed to the spot and investigated the blast site as well as the surrounding areas.
A case has been registered at City police station.
It may be mentioned that the 15th Director General Assam Rifles Sentinel Cup Equestrian Championship 2019 and the 9th Junior State Equestrian Championship, which began from January 9, will conclude tomorrow.
It may also be mentioned that this is the second such attack upon security forces in the span of a month, as on January 15, two bomb blasts ripped through the heart of Imphal city, between 6 pm and 6.20 pm (one at M Sector Defense PRO and another along the roadside of Johnstone Higher Secondary School), injuring a woman sweeper of Imphal Municipal Corporation.
On the other hand, the Manipur Equestrian Association has vehemently condemned the bomb blast.
The association has also appealed to whoever is responsible not to repeat such acts in the future.
