Imphal, July 04 2015 :
Coalition Against Drug Abuse and Alcohol (CADA) has strongly opposed Chief Minister Okram Ibobi's proposal to lift the Manipur State Liquor Prohi-bition Act 1991 which was enforced in the State to prohibit sale and consumption of liquor in Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at their Konung Mamang office, CADA president Y Ratankumar said it was very unfortunate to make a proposal for lifting of the Act by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi in the State Assembly.
He added that the Chief Minister must have studied the outcome of his proposal before he made his statement.
Ratankumar said that Manipur is one among few States of the country where public disposal of seized liquor is being witnessed.
The Manipur State Liquor Prohibition Act 1991, which was enforced in the State by the then Chief Minister RK Ranbir was amended in the year 2002 to lift this prohibition from all the hill districts of the State.
The move came just a year after the Great June Uprising.
The decision showed that the Government did not have any concern about the people and possible negative outcome which can affect more than 27 lakh people.
CADA would never allow the Government to lift liquor prohibition Act, he said.
Ratankumar further said that Manipur would not be able to remain as the sports powerhouse of the country if this ban is lifted.
