Imphal, June 02 2014: Altogether 98 minor girls were raped between 2001 and 2011 in Manipur, according to the National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB).

Meanwhile, a consultative meeting of stakeholders on 'Giving women their rights and entitlements as a road map to peace and development in North East India' was held today at Classic Hotel under the aegis of the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network and Control Arms Foundation.

Addressing the meeting, Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network president Binalakshmi Nepram said that women in Manipur are subjected to different forms of crimes and violence even as Manipuri women have been taking pro-active roles in many social issues apart from sweating every day for economic alleviation.

Manipur occupies second position among all the States of India in terms of the quantum of domestic violence against women, Binalakshmi said.

Violence and crimes against women and children is related to the conflict situation and AFSPA imposed in the State to tackle the conflict situation.

At the average, 300 women are made widows every year because of the conflict situation.

Citing the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, Binalakshmi said that all peace efforts should take women into confidence.

Peace entails ensuring all the rights and entitlements of women.

Gender and Development Initiative executive director Hajarimayum Jubita said that women and children bear greater impacts of the conflict situation because of the social structure where males enjoy a superior position over females.

Most of the schemes taken up for women and children cannot deliver their benefits to the targeted sections.

It turns out that all the schemes taken up in the name of women have hidden political purposes, Jubita said.

Women activist Sitara Begum underscored the importance of collective efforts of both males and females for the upliftment of women.

Nupi Samaj president Ramani, AMKIL president Mema, Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Lup president Momon, Joint Secretary (Tribal Affairs) Armstrong Pame, Widow Welfare Association founder Ruth Singson, Impact TV News Editor Rupachandra Yumnam and many Meira Paibi leaders too spoke at the meeting.
