A suspected underground activist killed during an encounter with personnel of 7 Assam Rifles at Kumbi Awang Khunou, 3 kms north-east of Kumbi Police Station last night at around 10.30.According to report received by the press, a havildar of the Assam Rifles identified as JK Sonowal was also injured in the incident.
The Havilder sustained bullet injury on the lower portion of his left leg and is presently undergoing treatment at Leimakhong Army Hospital.
Identity of the slain UG, who was clad in combat dress, has not yet been established and the body has been handed over to the custody of Kumbi Police Station.
The security personnel claimed that one AK-47 Rifles, three magazines and 151 live ammunition have been recovered from the possession of the slain UG clad in combat dress.
On being contacted, the PRO of PIB Defence Wing said that the Assam Rifles men were fired upon by the militants who numbered about ten.
One of the militants was killed in the retaliatory firing, he said and added that Assam Rifles suspects that another militant was also injured but escaped under the cover of darkness.
According to another press source, the underground activists who engaged the AR in the gunfight are likely to be cadres of Red Army of PREPAK and the slain cadre may be one Lt Corporal Thoithoiba of Moirang Oksongbung.
UNLF man nabbed: A combined team of Imphal East and Imphal West District Police has apprehended a hard core activist of UNLF during a cordon and search operation conducted in and around Kongpal Kongkham Leikai at around 7.30 am today.
The arrested activist has been identified as one self style Lt Maibam Sharat alias Suresh alias Chaoren Meitei (40) s/o late M Shamu Meitei of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai.
According to police source, Sharat is working as a revenue officer in the finance department of the outfit besides being a member of the Central Committee of the outfit.
Police claimed that he was also involved in many criminal activities carried out by the outfit.
