Ukhrul, April 25 2021:
The embers of the April 16 incident in which a huge mob ransacked the office of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) at Ukhrul over a land dispute continues to glow with either side still sticking to their stand with no sign of a rapprochement.
Instead it is psychological threats which are ruling the roost.
Pitched against each other is the TNL and Hunphun/Ukhrul.
Tension is running high with Hunphun/Ukhrul determined to protect the land which they claim was donated for education purpose and is thus not negotiable.
The land in question here is the plot of land where the Ukhrul Higher Secondary School stands, the plot of land which used to house the hostel and the place where the office of TNL stands.

People of Hunphun/Ukhrul say that TNL has no right to lay claim over the land with the Hunphun VAs declaring that the Headman is the supreme authority over land.
It was further informed that district Court had issued an injunction order at all the disputed land and to maintain status quo.
Hunphun/Ukhrul is incidentally the biggest town with the highest population in Ukhrul district while the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL ) is the apex Tangkhul customary body.
The recent April 16 incident reflects how deeply divided the people of Ukhrul and the TNL are over the land dispute.
The TNL on the other hand has again called an emergency assembly session on May 4 in Ukhrul town to discuss three agendas "Devastation caused during the April 16 incident; Tarnishing the sanctity of the customary body by the mob and amendment of TNL Riyan Akhum VII article-12" .
Subsequently, Hunphun/Ukhrul has also declared an "Emergency" to protect the place from external intrusion at any cost.
According to the custom of Hunphun/Ukhrul during Emergency no public gathering, celebration or entertainment is allowed.
Any person or group who violate the traditional custom would be held responsible of any consequences, they said.
Hunphun/Ukhrul has also strongly contested the order of "Khangareng/Debarment" adopted by TNL on April 16 .
The Hunphun village Council also warned individuals uploading information on the social media's must be careful.
Till date no dialogue has been initiated to bring both the parties to one negotiating table to resolve the matter.
