Imphal, January 23:
The Working Committee of the Apunba Lup has announced its decision to boycott the Republic Day celebration and said there is no reason why 'we should join the celebration which mark the start of a governance that does not respect the identity and aspiration of the people'.
In a statement jointly signed by RK Bhumi, Jotin Salam and Ch Premita, the publicity committee of the Lup alleged that the kind of misgovernance and atrocities committed by British imperialist power is still being carried out by Indian Government towards the people of the North East region.
The people of the region are still being denied their democratic rights, and under the guise of democracy, the security forces are subjecting to all sort of atrocities for the last 56 years, the statement charged.
It is rather ironical that the country which takes pride in considering itself as the largest democratic country in the world and even framed laws to protect the rights of animals, is promulgating laws which give unrestrained power to the security forces to kill any North Eastern people without conducting trial, the statement said.
The statement further alleged that Constitution of the country discriminate the people of the region as third class citizen.
