Minister stresses on promoting food industries

Health and family welfare minister Dr Sapam Ranjan has stressed the importance of healthy and quality food products for a healthy lifestyle as well as to promote food industries of the state.
He was attending as chief guest of the convocation ceremony of the first batch of Bakery and Patisserie course of Green Can Institute of Bakery and Culinary Arts held at the auditorium of Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) here on Thursday.
Thangmeiband MLA Kh Joykisan was the functional president while Imphal East DC Diana Khumanthem, health services director Dr K Rajo and Thangjam Agro Industries managing director Thangjam Joykumar were present as guests of honour.
Certificates were presented to 183 students, who completed the course.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ranjan asked the people working in the field of bakery and patisserie to uphold professional ethics and standard quality of the products .
There are several lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension as well as other non-communicable diseases, which are linked to unhealthy foods, he said, while stressing the need for hygienic and quality approach in producing ready to serve food products.
Processed and packaged food items being sold in the market may not always be good for health and the food safety authority is conducting regular quality check.
Eating in restaurants is becoming a new trend in the state and the trend makes it more important to have sincere cooks and other staff in these restaurants to provide healthy and quality foods to the customers, the minister elaborated.
He also noted that Green Can institute is the first bakery institute of the state, which is affiliated to the UK-based City and Guilds and expressed hope that the institute will bring a wave of change in the ready to serve food sector.
In his address, MLA Joykisan expressed Confidence that the varied activities for promotion of entrepreneurship being carried by Green Can will bring a change in the field of Bakery and Culinary Arts in the state.
Providing training to the youth of the state will also help to generate employment for the unemployed youth, Joykisan opined and congratulated the successful trainees of the Institute.
Green Can chairman Birendra Laishram and managing director Justin Laishram were also present on the occasion.
