Imphal, May 26 2022:
All Manipur Arts and Culture Students' Union (AMACSU) celebrated its 23rd Foundation Day at the auditorium of JN Manipur Dance Academy here on Thursday.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Padmashree Naba Wareppa pointed out that tradition is the basis on which a civilization is build.
However, Manipur is experiencing loss of traditional values, the most common example of which can be witnessed in marriage ceremonies.
He elaborated that weddings nowadays, both bride and groom do whatever, they want, the singers start dancing, both singers and Pung artistes are not acknowledging the offerings made to Sankirtan, etc.
He then contended that it is due to JNMDA that Manipuri Nata Sankirtan is still alive, or else it would have long gone extinct.
Stating that it is the responsibility of AMACSU to protect the cultural traditions of the state, Naba Wareppa said that anyone wanting to do Sankirtan must follow the rules of this art form or else he/she should be restricted from performing.
The present state of affairs is pitiful, he remarked and urged AMACSU to take a proactive role in this matter.
He then expressed belief that the government would formulate a policy for protecting Nata Sankirtan.
Presided over by JNMDA retired Guru (Rass) K Kumar, the function was attended by PAL director N Tiken as guest of honour.
Later, artistes of Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association presented a Thang-Ta performance while JNMDA students performed Kabui folkdance.
