Valley stands to lose Assembly seats

Imphal, August 25 2013: Given the asymmetric population growth rate between the valley and hills of Manipur as reflected in the 2011 census report, the valley districts stand to lose a few Assembly seats as and when there is a delimitation exercise.

As per the 2011 census report, the total population of Ma-nipur was 2570,390 with 1736,236 people settled in rural areas and 8,34,158 settled in urban areas.

The overall population growth rate was 18.6 percent.

Out of the total population of Manipur, 16,33,672 people are living in the valley districts while the aggregate population of the hill districts was 9,36,718 .

The total population of Senapati district was 1,93,744 and population growth rate of the district as compared to the 2001 census report was 23.8 per cent.

District-wise total population and growth rate as given in the 2011 census report were Tamenglong 1,40,651 and 26.1 percent, Churachandpur 2,74,143 and 20.3 percent, Bishnupur 2,37,399 and 13.9 percent, Thoubal 4,22,168 and 15.9 percent, Imphal West 5,17,992 and 16.6 percent, Imphal East 4,56,113 and 15.5 percent, Ukhrul 1,83,998 and 30.7 percent and Chandel 1,44,182 and 21.9 percent.

As the population growth rate is much higher in hill districts as compared to the valley districts, the valley districts are likely to loose some Assembly seats if there is delimitation, informed a source.

Child sex ratio (number of girls per 1000 boys) saw a decline in the 2011 census report.

It declined from 957 to 936 .

Child sex ratio in rural areas declined from 956 to 931 while in urban are as it decreased from 961 to 949 .

Chandel and Tamenglong districts recorded the lowest child sex ratios at 911 and 948 respectively, added the source.
