Visually impaired scores with letter marks in Maths

Imphal, June 03 2012: In an impressive performance as well as a huge morale booster to the differently-abled persons to pursue academic excellence, a visually impaired student of Government Ideal Blind School, Takyel scored letter marks in Mathematics in the recently declared HSLC (Cl-X) examination.

The outstanding achievement of thokchom Anjalina Devi, who scored 80 marks in Mathematics at the HSLC examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur, has undoubtedly proved that with proper guidance and hard work even the differently abled persons can compete with the able-bodied.

Anjalina, who is the youngest among four sisters and a son born to Th Dorendro and Sorojini Devi of Sagolband Khamnam Leirak, confided to a group of reporters that most visually impaired persons normally opt for alternative subjects rather than Mathematics for the particular subject requires more effort.

Informing that all her elder siblings have settled down, Anjalina, whose father is an employee of Irrigation and Flood Control Department while her mother works as a housewife, expressed elation that she has atleast returned the favour for the dedication and guidance of teachers of her school.

Sharing her experience in getting accustomed with details of Mathematical formulae and solutions, the differently-gifted student said she had to remember all the symbols and signs of Mathematics.

Thanking the Almighty for justifying her effort in getting the letter mark in one of the most taxing subjects, she also stated that visually impaired candidates appearing in such common examination are provided one writer each by the Board.

It is said that the writer reads out the questions and then writes down the answer/solution pronounced by the candidate.

She also informed that inspite of her school authorities sponsoring students, who are supposed to appear for the Board examination, to take private tuition in Mathematics and Science subjects teaching/instruction of the tutors could not be understood in totality for the visually impaired candidates are taught with normal students.

Anjalina, nevertheless, conveyed gratitude to several of tuition-colleagues for refreshing them the tutors' instructions.

Expressing her desire to pursue higher secondary studies in arts stream at Model Higher Secondary School, Sagolband Khamnam Leirak, Anjalina opined that academic performance of a student do not always depend on the school infrastructure but on the resolve and effort of the individual student.

On her choice for arts streams, she conceded that mathematics and science subjects being practical-oriented a visually impaired student like her will face a number of difficulties.

Aiming for graduation from a Delhi institute, Anjalina maintained that she would like to become a teacher for sharing her academic experience and expertise to the visually impaired students.

Meanwhile, Anjalina and her eight other schoolmates were felicitated by The Students Welfare Association for the Blind for their excellent performance at the BSEM-conducted HSLC examination 2012 .

Out of the nine students of Government Ideal Blind School seven scored first division marks while two of them passed in second division.

Delivering the introductory speech of the event, Ideal Blind School teacher namely Y Brajamohan Singh said that the School has achieved a historic first in seven of its students passing the HSLC examination in the first division.

even though the School established in 1982 had been attaining cent percent pass percentage, success of the seven students is the first for the School, he rejoiced while regretting that the School is yet to be fully equipped with requisite study materials such as Braille transcribe.

While all the successful candidates were presented gifts as encouragement, Anjalina was conferred with the Laishram Gouramani Award for the Visually Impaired Award donated by Padmashree Laishram Nabakishore.
