Govindgram people show the way

Inauguration of a bridge over Merakhong river connecting Govindgram Pebam Leikai and Govindgram Tongbram Leikai is a dream come true for the people of Govindgram area.
After long years of neglect by the Government, the people of the two localities contributed money and construction of the bridge started on December 3, 2007 .
Two local social activists, P Ibomcha Singh and his son-in-law T Manglem reportedly played a major role in mobilising the required fund from the people of the area .
For the purpose of constructing the bridge, each of the 23 households in Govindgram Tongbram Leikai have contributed Rs 2850 each and Rs 1000 from each of the 30 households in Govindgram pebam Leikai.
Though the construction work of the bridge was completed on April 15 this year, it was inaugurated and dedicated to the people today by MLA of Wangoi A/C Salam Joy during an impressive function.
Speaking at the occasion, MLA Joy described construction of the bridge with monetary contribution by the people of Govindgram is a novel act which could also be emulated by other people.
Member of Kodompokpi Zilla Parishad and president of Manipur State Panchayat Parishad M Chaoba Singh and Pradhan of Lairenjam Meijrao Gram panchayat S Manihar Singh were also present at the occasion as functional president and guest of honour respectively.
It is said before the construction of the new bridge, the makeshift bridges made of bamboo built across the river caused lot of hardship to the people.
On numerous occasion, the makeshift bridges have also been swept away in the strong current of water during monsoon season.
